JAMES KOVACIC - rd 13 of FBMW at MOSPORT RUINED BY TEAMMATE! - 29.08.2009
At the commencement of timed practice, Team Apex were able to salvage and build a car for James after the unfortunate incident at the 12th round of FBMW at Road America which saw James have a major incident through no fault of his own after half the field spun in front of him at the notorious and very dangerous kink in the 1st lap. With nowhere to go and no clear vision in front of him James car was launched into the catch fence and is effectively a write off.
Team Apex (the team that manages James car) were able to salvage a spare car for James to race at the 13th and 14th rounds to be held at Mosport Raceway in Canada this weekend. From the first session, the spare car was not fast enough and lacked the balance and grip his previous car had. James knuckled down and drove to his maximum in Qualifying, still managing to out qualify his teamates. After the qualifying sessions James explained that the car felt 'really unstable in turn 5, its costing me many tenths, I will have to try and drive around the problem as it appears there is no solution to the handling at the moment.'
At the start of the 13th Round, James made a good start and after the 1st lap, he was in a good position to pass his main championship competitor, Michael Lewis. Unfortunately at the commencement of the 2nd lap and in turn 1, James' teammate committed an ultimate error by running into James from behind and taking James out of the race in one of the fastest and most dangerous corners of the Mosport circuit. Unfortunately, this has resulted in an impossible task for James to take out the Rookie Cup. Unquestionably this incident has cost Team Apex and James a series win in the rookie cup. Joao Horto, (The Brazilian driver in car #18) who was the culprit, was no real threat to James and the championship. Unfortunately his actions have not only cost James and Team Apex the championship, it has also created much damage to James car. The team will have to work overtime to get the car ready for Round 14, unfortunately, it wont make a difference in the championship race whether James competes or not.
